Floxy Bee

Floxy Bee is one of a new generation of bright young stars coming out of Africa. The “Hikossa Queen” plays a style that combines several African genres, most notably Highlife, Makossa and Soukous. She began her career as a traditional highlife singer in her native Nigeria. However, where many of her contemporaries opted to copy Euro-American styles Floxy chose music from all over Africa as her inspiration. Her debut album though, recorded in Nigeria and New York, credits her Highlife roots by its title “I Go Die For You”, after the Ghanaian classic by Eddie Donkor. Fresh off the release of her debut album Floxy has just returned from a tour of Nigeria where she received rave reviews as Africa’s newest singing sensation.

Floxy Bee had established herself as the premiere female singer on the Lagos and Abuja circuit before her first international tour - in the company of Sonny Okosuns’ famed Ozzidi band in 1994. From New York to Chicago she quickly impressed fans at sold out shows enough to be called the “new African Miriam Makeba”. Since the success of that tour Floxy stayed in New York City which remains her base.

Floxy Bee performed at AfroFest in 1997.

Royal Fontonfrom Drummers

The Fontonfrom are the ceremonial drummers of Akuapem people of Ghana. They are particularly associated with the Chieftancy and will be used to welcome visiting chiefs for meeting and gatherings.

The most striking feature of the Fontonfrom are the very tall drums they use and the deep sounds that emanate from them. Very regal indeed!

The group has been playing and performing together several years including at Harbourfront, various cities in the U.S. and at AfroFest’94 and AfroFest’97.

Dr. Nana La-Kumi Sasraku is recognised by Ghanaians as the Paramount Chief and, as Consul-General, is also the official representative of The Republic of Ghana in Toronto. All this while operating as a practicing dentist in Etobicoke.

The group performed at AfroFest in 1994, 1997 and1999.
